KNOER at the OER- & IT-Summercamp 2023 in Weimar

From August 21 to 23, 2023, the OER & IT Summer Camp took place in the beautiful city of Weimar. This camp was hosted by the edu-sharing network.

Our representatives, Noreen Krause from twillo, Tim Wiegers from the Virtual Campus Rhineland-Palatinate (VCRP) and Alexander Clauss from the e-learning working group of the LRK Saxony, were there to participate in the discourse in the working groups and lightning talks and to contribute to the exchange of knowledge.

A central aspect of the camp were the lightning talks, where experts from different fields presented their insights and findings on OER and IT topics. Topics ranged from Open Data to Knowledge Graphs and ontologies to educational infrastructures without data silos. These talks provided valuable input.

In addition to the exciting lightning talks, workshops were also offered where participants could actively work on OER-relevant topics. Here is an overview of the workshops:

  • Workshop A: Editorial networks and OERde statistics.
  • Workshop B: Adaptive theme pages against shortage of specialists
  • Workshop C: Magic curricula
  • Workshop D: Good metadata and OER publishing using the example of zum.de
  • Workshop E: Capabilities of educational organizations/OER actors
  • Workshop F: How to bring media to the users – integration in country infrastructures

These workshops offered participants the opportunity to flesh out their ideas and develop solutions to current challenges in the field of OER and IT.

In addition to the workshops and lightning talks, the summer camp placed a strong emphasis on networking and the exchange of ideas. The participants were able to establish contacts, share experiences and support each other in order to strengthen and advance the OER community.

For the evening program, the summer camp had a special surprise in store – the OER band played, among other things, a new OER song written by Anne Zobel. The as always very good atmosphere of the camp.

The OER & IT Summer Camp 2023 in Weimar was a complete success and showed once again how collaboration and cooperation can flourish in the OER community.

Study on requirements for an OER-promoting IT infrastructure

In the higher education context, open educational infrastructures are of great importance as they enable free access to teaching and learning materials. Although a large number of OER portals and tools have now been established, there are still obstacles to the widespread dissemination of open materials. A key challenge is to better connect existing infrastructures and establish a universally accepted standard vocabulary for teaching and learning materials. KNOER partner organisations, such as the North Rhine-Westphalian OER portal ORCA.nrw and the Virtual Campus Rhineland-Palatinate (VCRP), together with the HIS Institute for Higher Education Development and the Innovation in Higher Education Foundation, conducted a study to investigate the state of development of open educational infrastructures for higher education institutions. The study by Dr. Klaus Wannemacher included a literature review, an expert workshop and expert interviews to identify requirements for an open education infrastructure from a technical, didactic and organisational perspective.

09.03.2023: KNOER event at the OE-Week

On 09 March from 3-4 pm there was an online session in English on the topic

OER in Higher Education in Germany – Current Developments and Good Practices of Cooperation.

The OER cooperation network “KNOER” illustrated the status quo of open educational materials in the German higher education sector. A short presentation illustrates current developments in the context of OER in the German higher education context (e.g. infrastructures, initiatives, actors) at the national level as well as at the level of individual federal states.

A special focus was on the OER cooperation network “KNOER”. In this network, several German federal states work together on the topic of OER in higher education: They coordinate their OER-promoting digital learning infrastructures and services, use synergy effects and advance the topic of OER in the German higher education context. Within the framework of KNOER, central OER-relevant topics such as OER quality, OER policies or OER infrastructures are dealt with in topic-based working groups across the federal states.

After the presentation, all participants were invited to ask questions, share experiences and contribute to the discussion.

KNOER was at the OER Camp 2022

We were there!

On the first day of the OER Camp 2022 in Hamburg, the cooperation network KNOER, in cooperation with HIS-HE, organised a workshop on the topic of “Requirements for an IT infrastructure conducive to OER”. We collected and discussed ideas, experiences and suggestions with participants from the various educational sectors.

On the second day of the event, the focus was on the exchange of ideas and collaborative work on very different topics in the context of OER in numerous barcamp sessions.

Finally, on the third day of the event, thematic workshops took place on the individual fields of action of the OER strategy of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The BMBF sees the OER strategy as a “learning strategy”. In the thematic workshops, the OER community had the opportunity to give impulses for the individual fields of action.
